Our Heart for Child Dedication

Discover the heart behind child dedication and our commitment to partnering with families to raise children in faith.

  • What is Child Dedication?

Child dedication is the act of giving back to God the gift He has given to you. It is an act of worship, thanksgiving, dependence, trust, and commitment. The ceremony is an opportunity to make your commitment public before God, your friends, and your family. The ceremony also reminds parents to depend on God and His resources, including the church family and friends, to help nurture their children.

  • Is Child Dedication the same as Christening or Infant Baptism?

Child Dedication is different from Infant Baptism or Christening. Child dedication is a public commitment by parents to raise their child in a Christ-centered home and guide them toward a personal relationship with Jesus. It is not baptism, but a moment to thank God for the child and seek His blessing and guidance in their upbringing.

  • What is the scriptural basis for dedicating children?

The practice of child dedication has been modeled throughout the Bible. The Israelites brought their 8-day-old children to the priest for blessing. Hannah brought her long-awaited son, Samuel, to the priest to dedicate him to the Lord. Mary and Joseph brought baby Jesus to the temple for dedication.

"Let the little children come to Me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.” Mark 10:14 NIV

  • What about the salvation of infants?

We recognize that salvation only comes to a child through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. It is not passed on to a child through dedication. We believe that all infants are destined for Heaven, should they pass away before they are old enough to enter into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

  • Do the parents need to meet any requirements?

Yes, we would expect that parents who want to publicly dedicate their child to the Lord, would meet the following requirements:

Saved: Parents who want to dedicate their child to the Lord must be as scripture tells us, “That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” Romans 1-:9

Church Attendance: The church was established by Christ to be a place of spiritual nourishment and encouragement for God’s people. We see the dedication of a child to the Lord, as a commitment between the parents, the church, and God, to raise up a child in the way they should go and, in the end, they will not depart from it.
